It’s time to contribute to my Music Archive!
Some songs can catch you at the right moment. The perfect background music for the mood your’e in. On one of my many New York City strolls, I entered this gallery in Soho. It seemed interesting and artsy enough so I thought why not check it out. I gazed at this art piece when I noticed a cool background tune playing on the owner’s laptop. Couldn’t really see the name of it, so I Shazamed and voilà, discovered Blood Orange and It Is What It Is. It was like a scene from a movie… a thing which happens often in New York City.
Now that I left New York and moved back home to a much smaller and mellower city, I’m finding myself dazed and confused by jet lagged sleepless nights full of thoughts, decisions, decisions and thoughts…. estranged to my own country and the old life I had here. I found this song very comforting through these not so easy times. I’ll share the lyrics here so you can see what I’m talking about, and obviously attach the YouTube link so you could hear what I’m talking about. It’s just great to discover new music. I get bored often by old music and lose all hope of falling in love with anything new. I’m so happy to stand corrected.
Artist Introduction: Blood orange is one of British singer, composer, songwriter, producer and author, Dev Hynes‘s projects. The guy actually performs with nothing but a guitar, a laptop and himself on stage and produces great melodic digital sounds that create such a great vibe. He often collaborates with vocalist/ girlfriend, Samantha Urbani, who performs on over half of Cupid Deluxe’s 11 tracks, which includes It Is What It Is. This album is the second one released for Blood Orange, and focused mainly on electronic sounds. I just love this, he’s a genius!!! Dev Hynes/ Blood Orange recently performed in London and New York and I failed to miss both… ahh! A man of many accomplishments, Hynes also has a wide resume of collaborations with various artists, such as Florence and the Machine, Mansun, and The Chemical Brothers on the 2007 Grammy Awards.

A tip: when listening to this it’s advised to gaze at a Soho gallery art piece… (lyrics are right below)

“It Is What It Is“- Lyrics
I’ve kept it open, and wanted nobody to be my friend
I’ve wasted moments in the bowery light, and lost it all.
So are you smoking? Don’t tell me baby you can’t work this out.
I’ve wasted moments in the soho nights, and lost it all.
Time will tell if you can figure this and work it out
no one’s waiting for you anyway so don’t be stressed now
even if it’s something that you’ve had your eye on, it is what it is.
On your own worries, i’m nothing even when i’m with my friends, but you make me think that i’m alive, when i’m alone.
Time will tell if you can figure this and work it out
no one’s waiting for you anyway so don’t be stressed now
even if it’s something that you’ve had your eye on, it is what it is…and it keeps on running back.
why wasn’t it real?
Talk me through the stages before i go home, why wasn’t it real?
Roxy got me twitching and i’m home alone
taking it for granted that you’re here with me, just tell me the truth
am i just a lonely fabled obsessive? That ain’t got no clue
Great tune and lovely New York memories. I’ve never been there but I’d love to visit one day.
“When you’re alone in New York City, the whole world is with you. The beaming lights of Times Square tell you a thousand stories; and then you head downtown and you know exactly who you are. In New York, you’re always going somewhere, meeting someone, leaving someone. You wanna go back, but you’re desperate to know; New York, do you remember me? New York has seen so many people and they’re all so interesting that you wonder how it could ever remember you. But you hope it does. Just as you remember the sound of sirens, the smell of coffee and the crazy magic that only New York knows, and you hope and pray you’ll be back there soon.”
